Phyllis Antoinette Sindoni

d. December 10, 2020

It is with profound sadness and grief that I announce that our mother, Phyllis Cavolina Sindoni, passed peacefully this morning; just shy of her 86th birthday.

Although fiercely proud of her living Sicilian heritage, Phyll was every inch an American who embodied the ideals of this country.  She empowered us to seize our individuality and to follow our own dreams and pursue our own passions and not to be shepherded by others’ expectations.

Phyll boasted a long career with the Island Park School District and is still remembered fondly by generations of pre-K children and their families who loved her guidance, warmth and kindness. She also worked during summers while school was out; most notably, as a Hostess at the famous Peter’s Clam Bar on Long Island.

She possessed a wicked sense of humor and often, when one of us asked what was for dinner, Phyll would grin cheekily and say, “leg of Lisa.”

A formidable lady, she bravely faced down COPD for a number of years, and was a cancer survivor.

Contentedly, Phyll spent the last years of her life in Dublin, Ohio surrounded by a family who cherished and cared for her: Linda, Jeff, Anthony and Kristina.

Phyll was born in Brooklyn to Salvatore and Cira Cavolina: Sadie and Frank.  She is survived by her siblings, Charles and Patricia; her children: Lisa, Joe, Laurie, Gethyn, Linda and Jeff; and her grandchildren: Emily, Samantha, Joanna, Anthony and Kristina.

Be at peace Mother, Dancing Diva, Granny Phyll, Deda; we will always love you, and we hope you are dancing all the way to heaven.

And of your memory, we say:
“And laying aside the pen, dipped
Not in tears’ volatile liquid
But in black ink of the heart’s well,
To read again what the hand has written
To the many voices’ quiet diction.”
