Kathleen Marie Hockenberry, Age 63 of Dublin, Ohio passed away suddenly on Friday, October 30, 2020. Kathy was born on August 22, 1957 to the late John and Juanita (McMillan) Hockenberry in Lorain, Ohio.
Kathy had a strong commitment to excellence in education and lifelong learning. She graduated from Lorain High School as the sole Valedictorian of the Class of 1975. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois. (Mathematics) At the Graduate level, Kathy earned Master’s Degrees from three institutions: Loyola University Chicago (Philosophy); The University of Iowa (Statistics); and The Ohio State University. (Education)
Professionally Kathy achieved recognition as an Associate Member of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) and as an Enrolled Actuary. (EA) She worked both as an Actuarial Consultant and as a Staff Actuary for several employers, including Nationwide Insurance and the General Board of Pension and Health Benefits of the United Methodist Church. Most recently, Kathy worked as an advisor and informal guardian of Josh & Emily of the Reichard Family. At the same time, she remained active in the Actuarial Profession, volunteering for a professional committee that creates & grades Actuarial certification exams.
Kathy was a devoted member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. In addition to regular worship & church activities, Kathy served as a Confirmation Teacher. She also chaired the Call Committee that ultimately selected Amanda Highben for an Associate Pastor’s position at the Church.
Kathy took an equally active role in Daughter Kaitlin’s activities. She spent countless hours volunteering and bringing joy to many, not just her own daughter. During Kaitlin’s time at Karrer Middle School, Kathy served as the President of the PTO. At Church, she was an energetic leader of the Middle School Youth Group.
When Kaitlin's High School years came, Kathy volunteered year-round. In the fall, Kathy was the Dublin Coffman Girls Tennis Boosters President. In the spring, Kathy was an extremely active volunteer for FIRST Robotics Competition and for Dublin Robotics Team 1014 ("Bad Robot"). In fact, Kathy was the Dublin Robotics Boosters President. These activities created a wonderful bond between Kathy and Kaitlin, and Kaitlin is extremely grateful for Mom's incredible altruism.
Husband Peter and Kathy are the self-described “Wanderer Kids” of their respective families. They traveled extensively throughout North America. Destinations covered the four corners of the continent: Alaska’s Denali National Park (Northern Lights); Pasadena, California (2010 Rose Parade & Bowl Game); Florida (Amusement Parks & Honeymoon Cruise) and Vermont. (Preschool Spring Break at a Maple Syrup Farm.) Favorite places include the Mountain Parks in the Canadian Rockies and Grand View Lodge on Minnesota’s Gull Lake. European travel is highlighted by a 1990 pilgrimage to the Passion Play at Oberammergau, Germany and a hiking tour of the Cotswolds in England.
Beloved Wife, Mother, Sister and Aunt, Kathy Hockenberry is survived by her Husband Peter Berryman; Daughter Kaitlin Berryman; Sisters Cindy Bach (Ken) and Mary Kay Nickoloff (David); Siblings-In-Law David Berryman (Elaine) and Kathryn Berryman (Langford); Nieces Nicole, Michelle, Emily, Rachel, Kelsey, Sarah; Nephew Matthew and many other beloved extended family members.

Kathy’s Memorial Service will be held at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 5475 Brand Road, Dublin, OH 43017. Pastor John Morris, officiating. Final resting place will be in the Columbarium Wall in the church’s Memorial Garden. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, advance registration is required to attend the service. In accordance with Prince of Peace protocol: Total attendance will be limited; mask wearing is required. For those unable to attend in person, a video recording of the service will be available on the church and funeral home websites.
